PJ Dalton Studio       Mixed Media Fusions of Pattern and Object

PJ Dalton Statement

I use obviously two-dimensional geometric patterns/shapes together with recognizable objects.  Each mixed media piece represents at least two separate, stand alone works.  The first is a study of repetetive, abstract, mathematical patterns; the second is the accurate representation of objects within the boundaries of their new, unnatural environment.

All my work is process driven - I create a geometrical pattern/grid that may be influenced by quilt patterns, geometry, or found objects.  This work has the potential to be a finished, abstract piece in itself.  It is layer upon layer of semi-transparent media that interact with each other like the mineral deposits of a sedimentary rock formation.  The next aspect of my process is akin to setting a table for dinner: Table, pad, -cloth, silverware, dishes, glassware, napkins and occasionally a centerpiece. This act (process) of "setting the table" is the addition of recognizable objects onto the abstracted environment.

The Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne was fascinated by the interaction of his subjects with the picture plane.  His goal was to make each object "sit" on its "perceptual table."  My goal is to make objects believably occupy a quietly unbelievable space.
